Right. So you have a family dinner planned, and you going for a simple and tasty onion soup menu. However, you are at a loss and don’t know what to serve with the soup. Have no fear (cliché, I know), in this article you will find my favourite list of sandwich recipes for French onion soup.

From the classic grilled cheese or something a little more adventurous or if you are more health conscious then I have the perfect recipe for you. So, sit back, relax, and let me show you how to make the best sandwiches that pair well with French onion soup!

Note: oven is measured in Fahrenheit and servings are for two people.

Cheese Recipes For French Onion Soup

For the cheese, you can use any type of cheese that you like. However, I recommend using a sharp cheddar or Gruyere cheese. These cheeses have a strong flavor that can stand up to the soup.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 4 slices x bread
  • dollops of butter or margarine
  • 2 x thick cheese slices
  • Optional: sprinkle of oregano and smoked paprika for added yum

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
  2. Spread a thin layer of butter or margarine on one side of two slices of bread
  3. Place bread, buttered side down, on a baking sheet
  4. Layer cheese slices on each slice of bread (sprinkle oregano & paprika at this point)
  5. Place another slice of bread, buttered side up, on top of each sandwich
  6. Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown and cheese is melted.

BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato) Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 4 slices x bread
  • dollops of butter or margarine
  • 6 x bacon slices
  • a few sheaves of lettuce leaves
  • tomato slices
  • sea salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: a few parmesan shavings

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
  2. Place bacon slices on baking sheet (you could use an aluminum roasting pan as well)
  3. Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown and crisp
  4. Remove from oven and let cool. 
  5. Toast the 4 slices of bread then butter it up (put parmesan shaving while warm)
  6. Assemble BLT sandwiches by placing lettuce leaves, tomato slices, and bacon on 2 bread slices 
  7. Then place the remaining slices on top.

Roast Beef Melt Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 4 slices x bread
  • dollops of butter or margarine
  • 2 x thick roast beef slices
  • 2 x cheese slices
  • onion, thinly sliced
  • Optional: add pickles for extra deliciousness

Ingredients

  • 4 slices x bread
  • dollops of butter or margarine
  • 2 x cheese slices
  • 6 x sliced button mushrooms
  • Optional: extra sprinkle thyme leaves

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
  2. Spread a thin layer of butter or margarine on one side of two slices of bread
  3. Assemble mushroom grilled cheese sandwiches by placing sliced mushrooms, cheese slices, (add thyme leaves at this point) on bread slice and then top with another slice of bread.
  4. Place sandwiches on baking sheet
  5. Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Chicken Parmesan Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 4 slices x bread
  • dollops of butter or margarine
  • chicken parmesan (homemade or store-bought)
  • mozzarella cheese slices
  • Optional: Italian herbs, cayenne pepper or tomato slice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
  2. Spread a thin layer of butter or margarine on one side of two slices of bread
  3. Assemble the chicken parmesan sandwiches by placing chicken parmesan and mozzarella cheese slices on bread (#add the spices or tomato slice) and then place other slice of bread on top
  4. Place sandwiches on baking sheet
  5. Bake for about 12 minutes or until golden brown and cheese is melted. You may also use a griller for larger sized bread slices. 

Bread Recipes For French Onion Soup

Okay, for the classic grilled cheese sandwich, feel free to use any type of bread you like, or have available. Personally, I prefer the sourdough or ciabatta bread on the days I feel a bit more adventurous. The sourdough and ciabatta breads tend to have a crispy crust that pairs perfectly with the French onion soup.

Here are some of my personal favourite Keto breads or sandwich recipes for French onion soups.

Keto Cloud Bread (Easy)

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup x softened cream cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 3 large eggs, separated
  • 1 tbsp. x erythritol

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (149°C)
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and cream cheese until smooth
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on high speed until foamy. Add the erythritol and cream of tartar and continue to beat until stiff peaks form
  4. Gently fold the egg whites into the yolk mixture until well combined
  5. Place 12 dollops of batter onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, making sure to smooth out any peaks
  6. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown

Keto Fathead Dough For Onion Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 x large egg
  • 1.5 cups x grated mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp. x cream cheese
  • 3/4 cup x almond flour
  • 1/4 tsp x salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (191°C)
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the egg, mozzarella cheese, and cream cheese
  3. Microwave for one minute or until the cheese is melted. Stir until well combined
  4. Add the almond flour and salt and mix until well combined
  5. : Place the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and press into a rectangle shape
  6. Add some dry herbs for extra flavor
  7. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Zucchini Keto Bread For French Onion Soup

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup x melted butter, cooled to room temperature
  • ½ cup x erythritol (yes, it is okay)
  • large egg, beaten
  • ½ cup x grated zucchini
  • ¼ tsp x salt
  • ½ tsp x baking soda
  • ½ tsp x baking powder
  • 1 cup x all-purpose flour (or Almond or Coconut flour)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C)
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the melted butter, erythritol, egg, and zucchini
  3. Add the salt, baking soda, baking powder, and flour and mix until well combined
  4. Place the dough into a baking tin lined with parchment paper
  5. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Remove bread once cooled.
