Are Instant Pots Easy To Use? A Comprehensive Kitchen Guide

Are instant pots easy to use? That’s a question I asked myself before purchasing one. After all, there are so many buttons and features on this amazing appliance; it can be a little daunting! Like all kitchen stuff, I welcomed the challenge. Yes, I had a couple of mishaps like trying to open it while it was still cooking, kinda felt like my food was locked in a vault (lost for all eternity).

It just hadn’t depressurized yet, apparently I had to read the manual instead of just winging it (who knew right!).

Hence, as someone who had to learn to use my multi-purpose pot akin to learning to row without a paddle, I thought I would streamline the process therefore read on for tips to help you navigate.

What is an instant pot and how does it work?

An instant pot is a multi-cooker that can be used for pressure cooking, slow cooking, sautéing and steaming. It has a stainless steel pot with a non-stick coating that is placed inside a pressure cooker and the pot is heated by an electric coil, which creates steam that cooks the food. It works by using steam and pressure to cook food; the steam that is created by the heated pot cooks the food, which is why it can be cooked so swiftly.

The pressure cooker part of the instant pot helps to keep the food moist and tender. The slow cooker function of the instant pot can be used to cook food over a longer period of time, which allows for more flavors to develop.

Before we get to the steps there are different functions of your instant pot to understand; the pressure cooker function, slow cooker function, and the sauté function [2].

The pressure cooker function

This is the most common function used when cooking with the instant pot and this uses steam and pressure to cook food in no time.

The slow cooker function

This function is great for cooking food slowly over a period of time and this allows for more flavors to develop in the food.

The sauté function

This function is great for cooking food quickly and the pot will brown the food over the specified amount of time; you can open it and feast.

How to use an instant pot for the first time

1. Add the ingredients to the pot

This is the first step in using the instant pot, you will need to add all of the ingredients for your recipe to the pot (obviously because no food, no point).

2. Seal the lid

The next step is to seal the lid and make sure that the lid is on tight also that all of the valves are in the correct position.

3. Select the function

The next step is to select the desired function, you can choose between the pressure cooker, slow cooker, and sauté functions.

4. Set the time

The next step is to set the time i.e. select how long you want the pot to cook for.

5. Start the pot

The final step is to start the pot. Once you have selected all of the settings, you can start the pot and it will begin cooking.

6. Release the pressure

After the pot has finished cooking, you can release the pressure and open the lid for your feast.

Instant pot pressure valve up or down

There are two types of instant pots, those with a pressure valve and those without. If your instant pot has a pressure valve, you will need to set it to the correct position before cooking. The pressure valve should be in the up position when you are sealing the lid and once the pot has finished cooking, you can release the pressure by moving the valve to the down position.

If your instant pot does not have a pressure valve, you will not need to worry about this step. FYI that is steam so be VERY careful when handling, I usually use protection like a shield and maybe armor (kidding) more like oven mitts.

FAQs – Are instant pots easy to use?

What is the point of an instant pot?

Simply put, the instant pot is a multi-cooker that can do the job of several kitchen appliances in one. It can act as a slow cooker, a pressure cooker, a rice cooker, and more. This makes it ideal for busy home cooks (or overworked moms like me) who want to make quick, healthy meals without spending a lot of time in the kitchen.

How do I know if my instant pot is pressurizing?

The pressure cooker will start to beep and the display will show “L” when it is pressurizing [3]. Once the pot is pressurized, the display will show numbers between 10-15. These are the numbers of PSI (pounds per square inch). This means the unit of pressure expressed is between 10-15 psi and you when you release the pressure turn the valve to “venting.”

Once the venting is complete it would have depressurized enough to open it and FYI this was why I struggled to open my pot as per my introduction when I hinted to THAT adventure.

Summing it up

Now that I’ve experienced all of the amazing things an instant pot can do, I definitely think they’re worth the investment. In fact, I can’t imagine being without it as it is fast becoming my favorite kitchen paraphernalia 🙂  There have been many a morning when I woke up feeling like death, to the cacophony of my kids moaning and had to rush out the door in my pjs while drinking cold coffee.

The day usually goes downhill from there so having a way to cut down on food prep time is a blessing!

If you’re on the fence about getting one, hopefully this post has helped you make up your mind. Have you tried cooking with an instant pot? What are your favorite recipes? Let me know in the comments below!
